The true Neom City

''a desert mirage''

In 2030, in the middle of Saudi Arabia's vast, barren desert, a towering glass wall that stretches endlessly toward the horizon glistens in the relentless sun. Hailed as the "City of the Future," this city represents one of the most ambitious urban planning experiments in the world. However, while its appearance was magnificent, the city remained isolated like a fantasy in a sand dune.

Ahmed, an engineer who invested his skills and dreams in building the city, lived in one of the upper floors with his family. Every morning, he climbed a 500-m-high vertical space and went down through elevators, bridges, and stairs to the depths of his workshop. The view from his house was spectacular, with clouds below and close enough to reach the sun, but the beauty contained an emptiness that he could not shake.

One day, Ahmed's young daughter, Layla, pulled his sleeve while looking at the city lights.

"Father, why do we live so high?" she asked.

Ahmed paused for a moment, remembering the world before this towering wonder:

"You know, our ancestors lived on the ground. Their world is flat and open in every direction. But now things are different. This is our new way of life."

As the days turned into months, Ahmed began to find cracks beneath the city's glossy surface.

The lower layers, barely touched by sunlight, were shrouded in eternal shadows.

The shadows were cast not just by glass or steel, but by invisible cracks between people.

People living below rarely ventured up, and people living above rarely visited the depths where the hum of generators and the hum of machines filled the atmosphere.

The city was a technological marvel, but a disconnect seemed to grow among its residents.

Ahmed's concerns deepened when he reconnected with a former colleague, Farid, who shared his initial excitement. Farid left the city's core project a few years ago and now lives on one of the city's lower floors, far from its shiny spire. "Mrs. Ahmed," Farid greeted him.

"Do you remember when we dreamed of building a place where people could live in harmony as one with innovation?"

Ahmed nodded, and his gaze was filled with nostalgia and regret.

"Yes, we were so hopeful then.

But I think the city has now... changed. Have you created a place that people really want to call home?"

Farid looked around as if looking at the city anew. "I thought this was our dream, Ahmed. But look at what we created. Isolation, division. This is not the heaven we imagined. We thought technology alone could change lives,

but it didn't give people time to change themselves."

As the two friends chatted, their voices softened, and as they delved deep into their troubles, they became increasingly serious. They talked about the city's technological triumph, in stark contrast to the deepening social divisions within its walls. Discussions of a brighter future were replaced by tales of disillusionment. It was not just crime rates or dark corridors downstairs. It was a disconnection, a loss of something Ahmed could not define. The city was vibrant, but lacking in heart.

That evening, Ahmed sat quietly with his family and watched the city's lights twinkling like stars in the distance.

The city was magnificent and even glaring, but he realized something was missing. He missed the smell of the ground, the sight of the open sky, and the way communities once gathered without barriers of glass and steel.

After a sleepless night, Ahmed made his decision. He sat down with his wife and stared at her with a determination he hadn't felt in years.

"This city isn't what we thought it would be. We have to start over in a simpler place.

A place that doesn't tower above us, but grows naturally in harmony with us."

With their families, Ahmed left the future city through endless sand and vast glass walls that separated them.

As they walked, the towering city behind them looked like a mirage, distorted and glistening in the desert heat.

And at that moment Ahmed understood. A true future city should not just touch the sky,

but touch the ground to develop a sense of belonging and humanity.

Ahmed's journey had only just begun. Every step of the way, I felt my shoulders getting heavy as if I were throwing off the burden of my dream that had become a prison. Now he was ready to pursue a new dream, in which development was measured by the power of connection, not the height of the wall, but a city built of hearts and communities,

not of glass and steel.
